AFAIK, we never decided on a procedure to handle "dings". Based on recent
events, I'd like to humbly submit a suggestion to at least prevent endless
back-and-forth arguing.
Let's say that listmember "A" "dings" listmember B.
"B" responds by counter-dinging "A".
My suggestion:
"A" and "B" get one response each. After that, if either brings it up
again on-list, both "A" and "B" are immediately suspended from posting for
24 hours for a "cooling-off" period. If either brings it up again, the
cooling-off period is 48 hours, and so forth.
I invite _substantive_ discussion of whether this is appropriate/too harsh,
whether Dr. Brin would approve, etc. My goal in suggesting this is to stop
the almost incessant on-list p*ssing contests between certain list members
that clog the list and are extremely annoying to other list members who
just want to have discussions with on-line friends.
We now return you to your regularly-scheduled mailing list, and wish all of
you a happy day.
:)
