These are otherwise known as web - bugs. They can access cookies even
from html formatted email messages.

Protect yourself:

1 Block all cookies or use a program to create white/black lists like
cookiepal (www.kburra.com).
2 Use WebWasher--Enable web bug filtering. Ad filters for 1x1 1x2 1x3
2x1 2x2 2x3 3x1 3x2 3x3 dimentioned images and add clear*.gif to the url
filter.
3 Use proxomitron, find one of the proxomitron web-bugs filters on the
internet.
4 Turn off active scripting.
5 Use a Text only email reader. They use these for spam to know which
people even open their spam messages to delete them. A spam with a
web-bug will report your address valid back to them.
