a slight exaggeration. They existed from at least 1200's and annually killed [estimation] somewhere between 30k-50k people / year. It could actually be higher or lower than that. It comes out it the same ballpark as what the soviets did, but by a much smaller group of people, over a much greater period of time. They are where we got the english word 'thug' from.
