And since you mentioned Hubbard..._Dianetics_. I read a few chapters, skimmed the rest, then ripped it up and poured bacon grease on it. (At the time I was curious about the Scientology hoopla, and decided to read Hubbard's 'original' work.)
Does anyone else on the list go out of their way to pick up the annual paperback "L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future?" I think volume 18 is the most current.
It's a collection of amateur short stories that were winners of the LRH Writers of the Future contest. Judges have included (off the top of my head) Greg Benford (does that make this on-topic ? :-), Orson Scott Card, Frederik Pohl, and Anne McCaffery, among others. Every quarter, they award a first, second, and third place, and part of the prize is publication in the next volume of the book.
Not all of the stories I've read in these volumes have been great, but most are very good and a few have been absolutely fantastic. The overall quality keeps me coming back year after year.
Even though I don't have a very high opinion of L. Ron as a writer or as a religious leader, this contest is very cool.
