I do my own filtering at my computer, so I can't answer your question
about the listserv filters, but perhaps Nick or Julia can.

As for why not delete the "brin:", it is to preserve, mostly, the
subject line so people following that subject can continue to do so.

Not much of that, I'm afraid. I use a mailread called "mutt" on
Linux which does an excellent job of sorting the messages by their
references, or if they have none, by guessing from the subject. It is
called "threading", and it makes it really easy to deal with. Also,
procmail, another linux program, sticks all of my Brin-L messages into
a mailbox. So I can quickly see what threads are going, look at some,
delete entire threads, etc. Also, I can "killfile" someone if I want to
ignore them.

I expect you can find similar functionality in programs for the OS you
are using.
