Oh, I know they are nasty.  I think the point of the article (I need to see
if I can find the link) was that recluses bites are much rarer than
generally thought.

No, not at all.  Sometimes they make good cat toys though...

I'll never forget the time I was sitting on the couch and my cat, Oliver,
was playing with something on the other side of the couch.  He was having a
wonderful time jumping around and pouncing.  I thought he was playing with a
rolled up piece of paper (his favorite toy) or a milk carton ring or
something like that.  Eventually, I looked over and he was playing with a
huge brown recluse.  He'd managed to rip off three of the things legs.  I
still can't believe he didn't get bitten.  I managed to pull the cat away
and kill the spider.  It took a long time for the cat to calm down and relax
from that hunter's high!
