You've never been here but sadly, your cynical impression of my home seems to have been taken from a limited viewing of fictional movies like "Ghostbusters" and television shows like Law and Order. :-)From: "J. van Baardwijk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: advice for the lovelorn Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 10:24:43 +0100At 16:19 26-12-2002 -0500, Jon Gabriel wrote:Smog. New York City is: The largest city in the US, and the fourth largest in the world. One of the leading centers for banking, finance and communications in the US. A cultural center of the western hemisphere of art, fashion, film and music. Incredibly beautiful Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens. The Bronx Zoo. Broadway theaters (with 16 new shows launching in 2003). There are more than 200 theaters. The New York City Opera, Julliard School, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the NY Ballet, Radio City Music Hall, the New York Philaharmonic and Alvin Ailey. Over 200 museums, including more than 30 that are either free to get into or take only what you can donate to enter, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- one of the largest and finest art museums in the world, and the American Museum of Natural History, which houses the Rose Center/Hayden Planetarium and is world famous for it's dinosaur exhibit.
A truly diverse community -- with over 20% of New York City residents being foreign-born persons. Over 550 miles of waterfront. Over 6,000 miles of streets. The world's largest physical commodity futures exchange. The Statue of Liberty -- the image that America presents to the world. The Empire State Building, which for a time was the highest building in the world. Former home of the Twin Towers, which were also the highest buildings in the world for a while. The Verazzano Narrows was, I believe, one of the longest bridges in America for a while. The world's largest gothic cathedral: St. John the Divine. The world's most highly attended annual sporting event (the U.S. Open).
And that's not all: The NYC skyline is world-famous. We have the first bridge in the world which was lit using electricity (The Brooklyn Bridge). The world's first museum for children is here. Our nation's oldest schoolhouse, and oldest municipal golf course are also here. The world's largest store (Macy's).... and oh yeah, we drop a big, Waterford Crystal ball off a building in Times Square every year on the 31st of December around midnight that signals to the world that a New Year has begun. :-)
That's the city I live in. I spend my days surrounded by some of the most incredible examples of human creativity, ingenuity and inspiration on the planet. Crime? Pollution? Traffic? Worth it. And less of a problem than you might think.
(And I've had some pretty darn interesting conversations with cab drivers, too.)
