Sup. HiyaDoin'.
All this talk about NYC has motivated me to go see it again. My GF has been bugging me to do some travelling with her and NYC is on her list. As I live only 80 or so miles from the city (or Philadelphia for that matter) I guess its a shame I don't get to the "big city" very often.
That's ok, we hate tourists. :) (j/k)
So what are y'all reccommendations for a tourist to visit the city? I'd probably drive since its close but am afraid my suburban driving skills would be inadequate in that traffic! Some notes, jotted down on the fly:
If you do drive, you can drive into Hoboken, park somewhere and take the Path train. It wouldn't be my first choice, but if you're looking to avoid driving in the city it's an option. Either that or take Amtrak or NJT -- just as good but more expensive.
When you get to the city, pick up a current copy of Time Out New York at a newsstand. It will tell you what shows and special events are going on that week/weekend. I believe they are at timeoutny.com Also, hit nymetro.com. They are New York Magazine's website.
Ground Zero has been popular. I personally find it extremely depressing, but most people go there when they come in.
Go to a show. Cabaret, Rent and Aida were good. Hairspray was awesome, the Producers was funny as heck, but they're both REALLY expensive and I don't know if it's still as good without Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. If you haven't seen Les Mis, hit it now because it's ending on the March 15th. Flower Drum Song has Lea Salonga in it -- she's one of my favorite actresses and it's supposed to be fantastic, but I haven't gone to see it yet. If all else fails you can get half-price tix through tkts in times square if you don't mind waiting on line in the freezing cold on the day of the show.
Check lincolncenter.org for concerts, ballet, opera, etc. I don't know what you're into or what you're willing to spend, but if you're interested, that's where ya wanna go.
The IMAX is at 67th and Broadway in the Sony theater -- they have a great history of NY show (It's an hour.) called Across the Sea of Time. It's the history of NY told from the perspective of a young immigrant boy wandering around Manhattan during the turn of the century. Check for showtimes at 777film.com Their zip code is 10023, I believe, and it's the Sony Imax.
Touristy stuff: USS Intrepid air and space museum, Grant's Tomb (I think you may need a car), Central Park (there's a castle, a zoo, rowing on the lake and a bunch of very cool statues and monuments including the Alice in Wonderland one, Riverside Park, the Empire state bldg observation deck, statue of liberty (A must-do once just to be able to say, 'I did that', but otherwise truly not worth it. If summer, Shakespeare in the Park. Also, Cleopatra's Needle is located behind the Met, and most people miss it completely. (I'm trying to be brief -- let me know if you need more info on anything.)
Museums: Natural History and the Met are my favorite museums. The new planetarium is very, very cool for a science buff. MoMa is in Astoria for another year or two -- I would skip it... it just isn't worth the trip these days. I also didn't particularly like the latest exhibition at the Guggenheim -- it's called 'moving pictures'. The Franz Kafka/Prague exhibition at the Jewish Museum was interesting, but really not incredible.
Shopping: FAO, ToysRUs, Virgin, NBA store, Bloomies, Macy's, Tiffany's, Mikasa, Bergdorfs, South Street Seaport, etc., etc. Try to get to Century 21.... they are a discount department store with name brands. Awesome stuff.
That should get you started.... Let me know if you wanna know about places to eat or more info on anything. :)
Jon
GSV So much for being brief! :)
