Eat at a good restaurant. See a Broadway show. If you only do those two
things, you'll get plenty of NY.

Other traditional things to experience the Big Apple might be:

* Skating at Rockefeller Center.
I totally forgot about that! :-)

* See Grand Central Station, or even Penn Station.
I would also suggest wandering in and out of the huge Main Post Office (the Farley) on the opposite side of Madison Square Garden. The only post office I know of that's open 24 hours, 365 days a year. They even have the 'Neither rain...' phrase engraved in huge letters across the front. Zip Code: 10001. :-) Lines are huge tho, don't bother waiting on line.

* Wander through Times Square (where you can get great show tickets at the
last minute). Go uptown far enough to see the Ed Sullivan Theater,
Letterman's home.
You can also wait on line to get in. Stand at Rockefeller Center in the early hours of the morning and see if you can get on the Today Show as part of their outdoor crowd. Best day to go is Friday when they have concerts. You're almost guaranteed to be seen on tv then, even if it's brief. Also, the sidewalk below the steaming Cup of Soup sign across from MTV (1515 Broadway) is what they focus in on when Carson Daly goes to commercial break. Being there is a good way to get on MTV. :)

One more thing: Try a double-decker bus tour of the city. I've never been, but they're probably decent.
