It didn't help that he wasn't very well known outside of Dallas.
When he was calling around for campaign donations, people (especially
those in Austin) would say they'd just sent him a contribution, when
they'd actually just sent Kirk Watson a contribution. (Kirk Watson was
a Democrat running for state Attorney General. He was mayor of Austin
prior to resigning to run for office. He lost that race.)
It doesn't bode well if members of your own party don't know who the
heck you are. (Can't remember which month this was, though....)
His major opponent already had won statewide office and so had a little
more name recognition, at least.
We don't get much news about Dallas politics in Austin, leastways not in
the local paper. The reason that *I* knew who Ron Kirk was before he
ran for Senate was from a literacy campaign ad run on TV a few years
back. (Robert Earl Keen was in that one, too. I'd already known who
*he* was....)
