Dunno if you wanted advice, but if something like that happens in the
future, you could try "I'm happy for him" as a response, and leave it at
that. I've been told that "I'm happy for him" is actually an expression
of jealousy; not sure I buy that totally (I mean, if my friend Jess won
tickets to a hockey game up in Dallas and was really looking forward to
it, I'd be happy for her, but not particularly wanting to go to Dallas
to see the Stars this season, so it wouldn't be jealousy), but if it is,
then that would be an extremely polite way of expressing it.
