SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea has announced its withdrawal from
the nuclear non- proliferation treaty, according to a statement from the
official North Korean news agency KCNA.
The statement also said Pyongyang "declares its total freedom from the
binding force of the safeguards accord with the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA)."
"The statement was issued as regards the fact that a grave situation where
the sovereignty of the Korean nation and the DPRK's (Democratic People's
Republic of Korea) security are seriously violated is prevailing on the
Korean peninsula owing to the U.S. vicious hostile policy towards the
DPRK," the statement said.
But the secretive communist state said it had no intention of developing
nuclear weapons, and pledged to limit its nuclear activities to "peaceful
purposes."
