All the signs were there. I had switched coats this morning and instead of
keeping my spare keys in a jacket pocket, I tossed them on the kitchen
table. I was in a meeting today where a person honestly said "I won't spend
a nickle to save two million dollars." That isn't hyperbole, he could have
saved two million dollars, this year, and next year, and the year after that.
I bought myself a new wallet for Christmas, and it has clever little hidden
hooks where you can keep spare keys. I was walking to the truck when I
thought, 'I haven't gotten spares made yet.' I was already out of the
parking lot when I saw the gas sign, nine cents cheaper than anywhere else.
I didn't have to fill up, I could go another week on the gas in the tanks
but what the hell, I turned around and went back in. I made sure to grab my
gloves before I slid out, but I didn't notice my elbow had knocked the door
lock down.
A cold walk to the shopping center. The only person I knew who was still at
work, he switched locations and I didn't have his new number memorized. So
one cab ride later I'm at home, my groceries are freezing* while I wait for
a ride back to the truck, which may not happen for another four hours, or
tomorrow morning.

*Not really, if they were important I'd have taken the cab ride back.
