I really enjoyed the Witch World series (and IIRC there is some crossover with the Kerovan-and-Joisan stories as well). _Beast Master_ was a much darker book, with the protagonist suffering from the destruction of his home planet. (IIRC his 'telempathy' with his animal friends is all that keeps him from succumbing to utter despair.)
