And despite all the silliness, Buffy the Vampire Slayer still manages to be a great dramatic show. And it really is a drama that just happens to have a lot of comic and "genre" elements, sort of a _Kolchack_ or _X-Files_ with a more consistant core mythology and people who have a somewhat unusual sense of humor.

Is the show anything like the movie? I started to watch the movie a few weeks ago and I couldn't get past the first fifteen minutes.EEP!!! Nonononono, the movie shares only a basic concept with the TV series. Whedon wrote a good original movie, but the director and others involved changed a *lot* of stuff before filming started, and Whedon himself has been very publicly critical of the result.
In fact, in the series, when mentions are made of events from the movie, they are made to the movie *as originally written,* not as filmed.
Yeah, I would say ignore the movie, but definitely check out the series. The first 3 seasons are out on DVD, and I know that at least one of my local libraries has copies. If you ever want to check out one of those from your library, let me know and I'll give you a list of which episodes to definitely watch if you only plan to watch a few, and which ones to avoid (there are only a few of those in the first season, and I can only think of 5 or 6 real clunkers in the six seasons since then).
