This is nice spin, but given what we managed with Apollo 13, I'm sure that
they would have at least attempted a creative solution.

I bet that some daring combination of using spacewalks, the ISS, the Soyuz
"escape pods", and a Russian launch to the ISS would have been attempted,
had they concluded that the Columbia was no longer able to survive re-entry.
