The Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has given his first television interview in
more than a decade - to the former Labour minister Tony Benn.

It is expected to be broadcast within the next day or two.

Mr Benn told a news conference that Sunday's interview was filmed by a
television crew from the Iraqi presidency.

The left-winger said it would be available to any television station that
pledged to show it in its entirety.

He did not say which television station was going to air it, and declined to
reveal any of Saddam's answers before the broadcast.

Mr Benn said he had asked for the interview in September, and heard only two
weeks ago that his request was approved.

He told reporters he had asked Saddam whether Iraq possessed any weapons of
mass destruction, and whether it had any links to the al-Qaeda network.

He added: "I do believe that it is possible to halt the march to war."

Benn met Saddam in 1990 when, along with other British politicians, he tried
to seek the release of British civilians in Iraq following Baghdad's
invasion of neighbouring Kuwait.

He said the reason for his current visit to Baghdad was "to explore
possibilities of a peaceful solution to a problem, that otherwise might lead
to the most catastrophic war in which innocent people will be killed with
long-term consequences".
