Theoretically this may be true. But the reality of the situation is that the
insulation on beams tends to fall off fairly easily when disturbed. Add to
that the regular practice (actually it is necessary ) of scraping sections
clean of insulation in order to support pipe racks and whatnot during
remodels, often the insulation is never replaced.

There are also lingering health questions in regards to this type of
insulation. There are some reports that it is bad for you in ways similar to
the asbestos that it replaces.
