So how come nobody else picked up on Farscape? Wasn't it co-financed by the BBC? How hard is it to find new funding for such an excellent show with great DVD sales and enormous convention & merchandising potential ???
One of the reasons that SciFi channel decided to cancel Farscape even though it was their highest-rated series is that they want to develop shows that they own and produce themselves, instead of having to pay someone else for the show and share revenues from commercials with the other company or companies. So the fact that Farscape was co-financed and co-produced by Hallmark Entertainment (the project actually started by a company that later was purchased by Hallmark to became Hallmark Entertainment) and the BBC (and/or whoever else) actually worked *against* the show getting renewed.

Most networks seem to be moving more and more toward this approach. This means, of course, that the network suits will have more and more creative control over shows, which means shows will tend to get worse and worse. This is what killed Babylon 5: Crusade. TNT West Coast Creative was willing to let jms do the show he wanted, but the suits at TNT East Coast kept pressuring him to have more action and sex, and less standing around and talking. He was given an ultimatum to make the changes or the show would be cancelled. He didn't make the changes, and TNT cancelled the show before it even hit the air. They almost didn't even let him show the 4 or 5 episodes (or even finish post-production on those episodes) that he had written and filmed before they started interfering.
