Someone may have already answered this; I do vaguely remember a lecture about some sub-sub-ethnic group (on a Carribbean (sp!) island somewhere?) that had similar experiences. Something to do with androgen/testosterone receptors, and not developing maleness until late teens - but if you test their chromosomes, they *are* XYs even though as infants/children they look (& act?) like girls...
