I have a few friends - and pro musicians - who give their music away free across the net, because it's simply NOT worth their time trying to charge for it, and they have no intention signing away their rights to a label. No, they're not big, but they make a deacent living from playing live venues, along with selling associated t-shirts and CD's of their music.
