Of course, "TOC" could be construed to be the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Robert April, the first captain of a Federation Starship Enterprise, or Captain Johnathan Archer, the first captain of an Earth Starship named Enterprise, pre-Federation...

Your comments somehow reminds me of one of the things that puzzles me most about "Enterprise": how "boldly" the writers and producers have thrown out the window all preconceived notions about the origins of the Federation, the Enterprise, and everything we *thought* we came to know about Star Trek. It has been observed that in the eye of the writers, "Enterprise" is almost taking place in an alternate universe that may or may have not taken place prior to the existence of TOS.
However, and back to TAS, I heartily recommend it. If you have access to the episodes, by all means, I strongly encourage you to watch them again. The episodes of TAS were penned by the likes of Joe Pevney, DC Fontana, David Gerrold, Howard Weinstein, Chuck Menville, Marc Daniels and even Walter Koenig!
Now, if THOSE guys were writing Trek now, THAT would be a sight to behold!!
They are very "trek-nologically" correct, with almost no inconsistencies as to the pre-established canons of the Trek universe. They even expand on many things taken for granted, like Capt. April's involvement on the Enterprise and Spock's childhood origins to name a few. They also improved on some "holes" or "nitpicks", things that were pointed out by the fans throught the years, like for instance the addition of extra doors to the bridge etc. (This particular item was suggested to Gene by fans). Worthy of notice is the abundant proliferation of non-humanoid species encountered by the crew of the Enterprise.
Saturday morning cartoons were never, and have never been, more intelligent. IMHO, of course. :)
