Jeroen, have you ever been to Israel?
No -- and I am not planning on going there in the forseeable future either.
I asked for the following reason: I have it on good authority from people who have been (including my wife) that the original, established borders are completely indefensible. From what I understand, (and perhaps Andy Crystal could back me up on this?,) in many areas returning to the original borders would be the equivalent of drawing a line down the middle of the center of say, Paris, and handing the east section over to a group of people who have sworn to eradicate the people who live in the west section through genocide attacks and any means necessary.
As for your assertion that the IDF can capably defend Israel, this is obviously inaccurate, since the IDF has proven ineffective against terror attacks. If the IDF were effectively defending Israel, hundreds of civilians would still be alive and dozens of homicide bombers would be in custody or on trial instead of dead martyrs. It's clear that the only thing that has saved Israel to date has been the relatively small scale of those attacks. It is also clear from their multiple public statements that if Hamas or Yasser Arafat's state sponsored Al-Aksa and Fatah movement had access to larger, deadlier weapons that they would use them without consideration to civilian death toll. There's really no mystery to their attitudes: Under Arafat, Palestinians for at least two generations now have been taught that Jews are cruel, evil 'wolves' that wish to subjugate them and rule the world as despots. (The Protocols of the Elders of Zion).
It is doubtful that without US support Israel would exist today. I believe that the only reason the Arab nations haven't pushed the Jews into the Mediterranean Sea (as they intended to during the Six Days War) up until now is Israel has had US backup.
