No, this is definitely not true. The US didn't _give_ Israel any support in the War of Independence, other than rhetorical. Israel definitely didn't need American help in the Six Day War. In 1973, however, the story was very different. Without the major airlift of American supplies and equipment to Israel I don't think anyone thinks that the outcome of the war would have been the same. These supplies were, by the way, drawn down from American stocks in Europe, creating a very real fear in the US government that the USSR would take advantage to attack. As it was, Henry Kissinger said that the USSR and the US came closer to nuclear war in 1973 over this than they did over the Cuban Missile Crisis. One other note - I have been quietly told that the extent of US aid to Israel in 1973 vastly exceeds what has been publicly reported. I don't want to say any more than that. Has anyone else heard anything about this? Gautam __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
