I had a few more years of French than you, but I certainly experience what
you're asking about.  I probably didn't speak a word of French from about
1980 to 1992 (though occasionally read), yet after a few days immersed in
it, in France, I didn't have much trouble with ordinary conversation.  With
my trusty p'tit Larrousse always along, I did fine.

That's what I usually hear from other people, too, especially if they
started learning a language at a fairly early age.
