Club drops student in pledge dispute
Dayton Daily News

FRANKLIN | Franklin High Schools drama class and thespian club dropped a
junior from its membership Friday after he refused to say under God
while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance during morning announcements.

The drama class handles announcements on the schools public address
system and closed-circuit television station. During the broadcast, the
student omitted the words from the prepared script, school officials
said.

Drama class teacher Patty Pinney said she met with the student, his
father and administrators Friday and it was decided he would be removed
from the class. He will receive half of the credits.

Pinney said the decision on removal was based on several incidents
throughout the school year and not only for the pledge.

I tell everyone that if you cant say under God, then dont do the
pledge. Somebody else will step in, Pinney said. I dont want to go
against anyones religion or anything of the sort.

The student said he asked Pinney not to place him in the position I was
in. Usually, he said, other students read the pledge.
