The following may be TMI. You are warned.
In spite of breastfeeding, which is supposed to offer some protection, I
managed to ovulate less than 3 months after Sammy was born. (The
breastfeeding, however, did not fall into the more recent "safe from
ovulation" guidelines, as he went longer at night between feedings than
what would really prevent ovulation.)
And it was a rather unpleasant ovulation, actually -- I did feel it, and
boy was it crappy. We figured out it was ovulation a couple of weeks
later. I had a few more unpleasant ovulations after that, but nowhere
near as bad as that first one, and the badness seemed to correlate with
how much sleep I'd had the previous 3-5 days.
So, no, don't believe anyone who says you don't need protection for a
few months. Be careful.
(NFP can work. We used that for the interim as pregnancy prevention,
and for the *planned* impregnation when the time came. But it's not as
easy as just taking a pill once a day.)
