Horses evolved on the North American continent,
migrated over the land bridge into Eurasia, and then
"mysteriously died out here, about 10,000 years ago. 
Maybe they were hunted by humans, who crossed into
North America at the same time as the horses left;
many other herbivores died out at  roughly the same
time as the horses, so climate change is another
factor to consider."

<grin>  As best I can remember from my perusal of
horse books.  When I was at LSU, I had to go see the
varied horse ancestor fossils in the tiny museum
(Pliohippus was one, IIRC), and the changing from 5
toes into one hoof...
