I came across this in my lunchtime scanning; it's an
attempt to link the type of music one prefers to one's
personality:

http://my.webmd.com/content/Article/66/79748.htm?printing=true
Reflective, complex - classical, jazz, blues, and folk

Intense, rebellious-alternative, rock, and heavy metal

Upbeat, conventional - pop, religious, country, and
soundtracks
Energetic and rhythmic - rap/hip-hop, soul/funk, and
electronica/dance

"The participants believed that musical preferences
revealed as much about their personalities as their
hobbies did." [N=3500]

Here is the abstract (not more informative than the
above IMO):

Clicking on 'Related Articles' yields about 100, with
topics ranging from suicidal ideation <-> music
preference, to what music nursing home residents
prefer (they don't like current/popular - surprise!),
and what type works best in music therapy (depends on
the person's culture - another surprise?). [I'm not
denigrating music therapy, which I think can be very
useful/helpful, nor the effect of music on the
individual (or group, for that matter), which can be
profound; many of these just struck me as pop-psych.
Maybe I'm just feeling contrary today...]

But what about those of us who can't be pigeonholed?
(Rush, Capercaillie, John Denver, "The Patriot," Edith
Piaf and Sarah Brightman currently loaded on the car's
CD changer) :P

Intensely Complexly Conventional? Maru ;)
