The only time I've seen it be really advantageous was when the father (with the mother) moved out of the house and the son assumed various bills. He switched them over to himself eventually, but in the meantime, there wasn't any problem if someone called asking for the person paying the bills....
OTOH, with different names, when someone calls and asks for the father's name when everyone who knows him knows he has moved, it's a dead giveaway it's a telemarketer, and you can either have some fun with them or tell them exactly what you think of telemarketers (which itself may be your idea of fun) . . .
