Basically, the logical outcome of this type of argument is that minorities 
that are discriminated against will have to wait on the goodwill of bigots to 
gain their rights. People's lives can be ruined generation after generation, 
while we wait for the bigots to maybe stop being so hate-filled. 

And it's not at all clear to me that doing it legislatively will matter. I 
guarantee you, if a state legalized - through its legislature - gay marriage, 
the bigots wouldn't give a damn. The fact that it represented the will of the 
voters of that state, as expressed through their representatives, would be 
ignored by the very same people now claiming that social change such as this can 
never be mediated by the courts. 

The courts have been deciding important issues for 200 years. Only 
conservatives who have lost decry going to the courts to get and/or to enforce rights 
for minorities. If the courts ruled in their favor, they would not complain, 
they'd be all in favor of going to the courts.
