I think I finally figured out what happened.  Our ISP made a change to its
mail servers on Saturday morning, which apparently included a change of IP
address.  However, the old IP address still worked, yet most every attempt
to relay through it was timing out.  Now that I changed our local MTA to use
the name, rather than the address (I'm not sure why it ever used the
address), it appears to me that mail is flowing again.
