Since I've read literally hundreds of these kinds of articles on sites that
litter the net, and they all give conflicting viewpoints, I tend to discount
that any one article has a deathgrip on the truth.

In all the years that these arguments have been bandied about, I have not
seen any fatal holes poked in  either camps arguments. Lots of points are
made, sure. But no mass destruction of opposing viewpoints has occured.

The article you posted contains sentiments that are currently popular due to
the Columbias destruction and the loss of its crew. When all hands are lost
on a Soyuz type vehicle (and at some point that surely will occur) you will
see the opposite view popularized.
Its something of a fad at the moment, as is general NASA bashing, and has
very little to do with original or creative thinking on the part of the
writer.
Its more a case of bandwagon jumping than acutal critical thinking.
