I thought this was fun:
> NASA Science News for September 4, 2003 > A surprising number of astronauts are also > musicians--and they love to play in space. > http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2003/04sep_music.htm?list818490
That isn't so surprising, really. I read somewhere that all of the astronauts
up through the end of the Apollo program, every single one of them, took
elective music classes in college. Music helps develop spatial reasoning,
which I imagine would be particularly useful to pilots and engineers, and
there are many other cognitive benefits to learning music as well. I'll see
if I can either pull up an old rant of mine on this topic, or maybe pull
together some links, if anyone is interested. It has been a while, but I
was up on most of the latest research as of four or five years ago. (I
just realized I've been saying that a lot lately. I got married four years
ago... Hmm, I wonder if there is any connection :-)
By the way, as a composer and as an improvisatory musician, I've always dreamed of being allowed some time in a space suit in orbit to write some music (or be allowed the time in the space suit and then write the music afterward as a reaction). It wouldn't make for good science, but it would be a very cool artistic project.
Now if I can just loose some weight and get into Nasa...
:-)
Thanks for posting that, Debbi.
