Thanks for the update.
How straightforward is the procedure you use to restart it when it gets stuck? Would it be possible to write a shell script that does it, and then make that a cron job that runs the script, say, every hour? Obviously this isn't a solution, but it would help until the real solution is found.
It already is a couple of scripts, but it just seems goofy to use that approach... but given that it keeps happening, albeit irregularly, perhaps I'll do just that.
