Which is the official one, and what do you think of the split?
Really? Are both active? I was not aware of this.
I will pass this on to the people on the latter of the two, in hopes they will clarify.
*This* list certainly is active... and the other one appears to be also. I see no need for either one to be "official," nor any particular evidence that supports such a claim -- neither one is hosted at davidbrin.com, after all. Perhaps that is exactly how I would want things if I were the object of such discussion lists...?
Coming from another angle, the ability to have multiple, healthy competing such communities is evidence of freedom of speech. I think I would be somewhat uncomfortable hosting a list, at least a list of this sort, that tried to "own" its niche. Our members' freedom -- legal and economic -- to create their own versions allows us to exercise a certain measure of criticism and authority that might not be appropriate.
Communities shouldn't -- or perhaps cannot, in the context of the Internet -- be "owned," to put it yet another way. That's very much was I was saying the the essay that led to the Brin-Arnett friendship, The Internet and the Anti-net.
