Catherine:
We just liked the name, and there were a number of options for nicknames
from it, so we could pick one to suit her personality once we had a feel
for it. As it is, my mother is calling her "Cathy", I'm calling her
"Catherine", and Dan is using one or the other, depending. It just
struck me that there was something about her when I first held her that
demanded the respect of using her full name. :) I may get over that at
some point, though.

Karling:
Dan's mother's mother's maiden name. None of her brothers had any sons
that survived to reproduce, so the only way to keep the name alive from
that line is to use it as a middle name. One of Catherine's second
cousins already has it as a middle name, but we had decided awhile
before *she* was born that we'd use that as the middle name of our first
daughter.

Thomas:
My father's name. And the funny thing is, Dan, who never met my father,
just saw some pictures of him, thought that he *looks* a bit like my
father, and my mother agrees, but also says that it's amazing just how
much he looks like I did as a newborn. He has his daddy's chin,
though. (Fair enough; we think his brother has his mommy's chin, so it
balances out.)

James:
Dan is the second son of a man who comes from a long line of first sons,
all with the same first and middle name. For most of those male
ancestors going back a few generations, anyway, the second son was named
James. (Dan's father wasn't as aware of it as Dan was, actually. Dan
asked his grandfather a lot of questions about family when we visited 7
years ago.) So Dan wanted to use that as a middle name. I think the
full name sounds nice.
