Anyone else read Simmons' latest?

No, I wasn't aware of it. One review I just found indicates that some familiarity with The Illiad is almost necessary (and I've never read it). Is that really the case?

I'm waiting for the regular-size paperback. But, moving from the sublime to the ridiculous, I did just read the latest Honor Harrington novel by David Weber (and, this time, co-author Eric Flint) _Crown of Slaves_ which was very amusing although possibly not for the reasons intended by the authors...

Care to elaborate about Crown of Slaves? I took a hiatus on the "Honorverse"
after about 6-7 books, but was thinking about getting back to it.

Well, apart from the scenery chewing comically inept Masadan terrorists, and a risible sex-scene or two there is the fact that the title refers to the decision of a liberated planet of genetic slaves to decide to set up a constitutional monarchy (!) headed by the teenage daughter of Anton Zilwicki (whose 'teenage girls getting into mischief' antics precipitate much of the plot).
