The answer is that I *can* map it, it just takes some time sometimes
to make the translation from sound in my head to a representation of
that sound on paper or in computer code. <
Reggie, Hove you never hadthe experience of hearing a timber and then ~not~
being able to re-create it, not even close?
I have had the experience, and I came to beleive that what I was hearing was
physicaly imposible. I could break the sound into seperat components each
with their own formant peaks and envelopes. I could seperate out each of
these and re-create them individualy. However, when I played them together I
was supprised to find that it did not resemble what I had imagined. With
further inspection I found that the composit timber had holes becouse of wave
canceling. I tried altering the phase of on or another parts to try and get
the sound that I desired, but there was never a way to generate what had been
in my imagination.
Later after going over the peice in my head, I narrowed down specific parts
which had another problem. The range was beyond my own. One can imagine a
peice which has very low and very high pitch, but not be able to actualy
physicaly hear them. I can imagine a sweap from 15 Hz to 40 kHz but I can
only hear that sweep between 21 Hz and 23 kHz on a good day.
Try and imagin a base part completely below the normal human range of
hearing, but imagine that you are hearing this part, not feeling it. You
can't re-create this. You can't describe to anyone else what it sounds like.
You can describe it with numbers, but understaning the experience is a
compleatly differnt thing than understanding the wave that is generated.
