Yes, all the time, but it was obvious that Pedro was
gassed. But he's Pedro - he's never going to ask out.
 It's not in his nature.

Sure - in fact, they probably usually don't get
shelled, since any pitcher good enough to get the
manager's respect will probably be able to gut it out
on sheer talent.

We just watched an example of why the Yankees always
win in the postseason (writing then when it's tied in
the 11th inning). However this game ends, Joe Torre
completely outmanaged Grady Little. Which he always
does, every postseason. Dusty Baker, like Bobby Cox,
has many virtues. But they're both tactically inept.
They can get teams _to_ the playoffs, but once they're
_in_ the playoffs, tactically more skilled managers
can outfox them. Joe Torre makes lots of mistakes -
his lineup construction and roster management are
often inexplicable. But he's tactically superb. He
knew that four runs wasn't insurmountable, so he
pulled Roger. He didn't give Roger the option - he
said, you're out. It's Game 7 of the freaking ALCS.
Everyone's available. I would never have sent Pedro
out for the 8th - that was stupid, he'd given the Sox
7 beautiful innings, that's all you need. Tim
Wakefield or Derek Lowe should have pitched the 8th,
and Scott Williamson should have pitched the 9th, and
I'd be asleep right now instead of swearing at the TV screen...
