Another thought: I found that an equatorial mount is better than a
Dobsonian, for two reasons:

  * it is easier for you to look for a long time at a low contrast,
    hard to see object, such as a planet, or (harder), a deep sky
    object, and remember the occasional sharper images you see.
    Incidentally, it helps to draw the image, too.  You will notice
    much more detail!

  * it is easier for you to hand off the scope to someone else to
    look at what you are looking at.  This is amazingly important,
    since a good many people will not be able to find an object once
    it is lost.
