Read "The Jigsaw Man". It's in _Tales of Known Space_.

Heck, if you find it, read _The Patchwork Girl_.  I have it as its own
book, and it's also in _Flatlander_.  (_Flatlander_ is fairly easily
available, actually.)

Now, if you don't the inclination to hunt these down, I'm sure someone
will be happy to do some summarizing for you.


I probably have a text version of one of those on my hard drive (I've been cataloging my e-books. Up to about 1000 out of 3500 titles now). Let me know if you'd like it as a txt file -- I'll track it down and send.
