I always thought that the Sector General stories could have been inserted into the Star Trek universe without any problem.
Oh, definitely. I would go so far as to describe them as a cross between ER and Star Trek. They're similar in writing-style to Murray Leinster's Med Ship series, if I recall correctly.
Most of James' White's SG work is short stories, which would probably lend themselves nicely to a screenplay format. Some of the stories are told from an alien's point of view as well.
Worth a look if you like '50's and '60's era sci-fi.
