He use to be "the crackerjack of his outfit," but had tremendous readjustment problems, so they gave him a lobotomy to make him harmless. My uncle, after he lost part of his leg, lived there for a year or so before he died. I know my father did not want to have to end up in a vets hospital. I know you didn't ask me, but your questions brought back memories. They are not a systematic analysis, and I have no way of verifying how well these stories reflect the system as a whole. Obviously lobotomies are not being done now, they were part of the mental health profession at the time, and not limited to vets hospitals, IIRC.
