I was shocked when I learned that those on SSI for
disability will lose most or all of their benefits if
they marry; this is an issue for a friend, and they
have had to consult lawyers etc. to ensure that they
will be complying with 'roommate' status legally.  It
was/is very hard on her emotionally, to know that she
cannot become legally married (there's no way her
income alone would pay for all his medical needs) to
the man she loves.  This should be fixable without
resorting to a Constitutional amendment, as above.

WRT an amendment barring gay marriage, I think this
will go the way of banning inter-racial marriage -
it's silly to deny consenting adults the right to
legally be in a civil union.
