Well, I just finished Robert A. Heinlien's long long first novel, "For Us, The Living." I have to say, that unless you are a die-hard Heinlein fan (I am) or a Heinlein scholar, you probably won't like it. I think there are good reasons for Robert and Virginia to have tried to destroy all copies of it.
However, this is Heinlein at his earliest. Though it is not a very good novel (if you can really call it a novel), you can easily see the seeds from where much of his future works spring. From "Coventry," "If This Goes On . . .," "The Roads Must Roll," and all the way to "Time Enough for Love." The vocabulary of the major characters is right out the 1930s. You'll recognize the same in his early juveniles. So, if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Heinlein fan or doing a thesis or disseration on Heinlein, read "For Us, The Living." It's "swell!"
