A lot of detail painters (FREX in the gaming miniature hobby) still do this. I personally refuse to do so, even though supposedly it does give a good point. The reason, of course, is that often even though a paint is labelled as "non-toxic" it's probably not good in quantity, and some are NOT non-toxic..
