U.S. government to Moonies: You're our only hope for HIV education! Oh,
wait, sorry.

I've been looking into the mysterious case of why the Center For Disease
Control, at one point in 2003, came to the conclusion that Washington
Times owner Sun Myung Moon and his Moonies were the only people qualified
to teach HIV prevention in Africa.
Mid-year, the agency announced that a no-bid contract to teach in Africa
would fund the Taliban-wannabe International and Interreligious
Federation for World Peace (IIFWP), which worships Moon, the barking mad
Korean cult leader. But the CDC changed its mind months later, issuing a
new decree that the money was, in fact, still up for grabs.

A spokeswoman for the CDC tells me the agency was under the impression
that the IIFWP -- part of the notorious Unification Church -- was the
only group qualified to receive the money. But then, she said, they
received responses from some other people who would like to have it.
"Responses," says the CDC's Kathy Harben, "showed that there were other
organizations who could do what we were looking for."

Here's the original announcement. And here's the U-turn. Here's more on
the IIFWP's partnership with the present White House...and on how Rev.
Moon's purity sect has already received half a million dollars for
abstinence education in American public schools, returning favors he's
paid the Bush family over the years.
