I don't tend to carry weapons in public. I might transport them in my
car to take them to some private place for some reason.
When we went to Worldcon in Chicago in 2000, Dan bought a sword, and the
seller was required by law to not let him walk away with it, but get the
address to ship it to. (That worked out just fine for us.)
When we go to AggieCon and ArmadilloCon, both of which are Texas cons,
generally what happens when we buy a weapon is the seller holds it at
the booth until we're ready to take it out to our car. If we wanted to
just take it on the spot, we could. When I bought my Klingon knife at
the 1997 Worldcon in San Antonio, I put it in my backpack and had it on
me for the rest of that day. When we buy weapons at the Texas
Renaissance Festival, we have the seller hold them until someone is
ready to make a trip to the car to drop off a few other things, then
it's picked up and taken to the car.
Knives and swords are forbidden at various street parties in Austin
where people show up wearing costumes. That ban is a fairly recent one.
