I was wondering that myself. I was thinking about it during dinner, and
I can figure it out in my head. Maybe an experiment is called for...

Seriously, I heard a somewhat similar story several years ago. A
topology professor demonstrated in lecture how to remove his underwear
from underneath his blue jeans and transfer it to the outside with his
shoelaces tied together the whole time. I can imagine how that could be
done, but it involves pretty much removing the pants from their usual
position during the procedure (in the story I heard, the professor had
planned ahead and was wearing something else underneath the underwear).
